2026-27 Age Group Realignment
2026/27 Grade-Year Age Group Change FAQ
2026-2027 Age Group Realignment
Starting with the 2026–27 season and in alignment with the leagues and clubs across Wisconsin and in the United States, Madison Magic SC will be moving its player registration from the current calendar year system (January 1 – December 31) to the newly adopted school year system
(August 1 – July 31).
What change is happening for 2026/27?
Beginning in the 2026/27 soccer year, U.S. Soccer is transitioning from the current Birth-Year registration system to a Grade-Year system, aligning youth soccer team formation with school grade levels.
Why is this change being made?
The change is intended to:
- Align soccer age groups with school systems
- Reduce team fragmentation as players enter middle school
- Improve social continuity (kids playing with their classmates)
- Support long-term development and retention
- Address concerns about late-year birth disadvantages
Is this change optional?
No. Once implemented by U.S. Soccer, all clubs, leagues, and tournaments nationwide must follow the Grade-Year structure.
Will my child still be on the same team?
Possibly, but not guaranteed. Teams will be reorganized within the new age groups. Some players may stay together, while others may join new teammates based on grade alignment.
Will my child move up or down compared to their current group?
Some players may shift up or down relative to the new age groups.
What if my child is very young or very old for their grade?
Players will be grouped within the grade aligned age groups. This does not prohibit a player from a different grade from playing on a team as the new age groups still have a date of birth requirement to them.
Will this affect playing time or competitive level?
No. Placement is based on grade + ability, ensuring teams remain competitive and balanced.
Will this change their coach?
Some coaching assignments will remain the same; others may shift based on updated team structures.
Can my child “play up” in the new grade based age group system?
Playing up may be considered only if:
- A player is clearly dominant within their grade based age group
- Space exists on the older team team and there is limited impact to the player numbers for the age group team
- DOC approval based on developmental appropriateness
